Rhino Thandi and Family
Kariega Game Reserve is delighted to announce that poaching survivor, Thandi the rhino has given birth to a calf this morning at 8h50. The birth was witnessed by two Kariega rangers and shortly afterwards; wildlife veterinarian Dr William Fowlds observed the mother and her calf from a distance. He confirmed that both are doing well.

Over the past two years former NBA basketball star Yao Ming and various film crews have visited Kariega Game Reserve to meet rhino Thandi and put together a documentary to help end trade of illegal ivory and rhino horn. This documentary, Saving Africa’s Giants with Yao Ming, will premiere on Tuesday, November 18 at 10 PM ET/PT (US) and Friday, November 21 at 9PM (UK) on Animal Planet.

Thandi spends most of her time in the company of one of the other rhino cows on the reserve. We are excited that Thandi is likely to give birth to her own calf in early 2015

The poaching of three rhinos at Kariega Game Reserve in March 2012, their amazing courage and Thandi's incredible survival inspired trail runner Sian O'Keeffe to take action. He decided to start a trail run, called the Rhino Run, to raise funds and awareness for the plight of our rhino.
