Kariega Foundation: Computer Hubs Bridging the gap

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” – Edward Everett Hale
It all began when children from the community needed access to a computer to complete their homework. But when they were finally given the opportunity, they didn’t even know how to switch the computer on. That single moment led to the start of the computer hubs.
Programmes Built on Community Needs
At our foundation, programmes start with a need recognised by the community, rather than a need identified by the foundation. We can we extend a helping hand, but we cannot do this alone. In the case of the computer hubs, success has only been possible thanks to key partners: Ndlambe Municipality and BBD Software Development.
Today, thanks to this partnership, the communities of Ekuphumleni and Marselle each have their own Library Computer Hub, offering access to 30 computers for both learners and community members. These hubs are staffed by a full-time IT technician and facilitator who:
- Ensure computer maintenance and safety
- Provide IT support to learners and community members
- Facilitate IT and robotics clubs aligned with school curricula
- Organise community events such as Library Week, Mandela Day, and Waste2Toys workshops
Learning, Playing, and Growing
In communities where IT facilities were once non-existent, schools now have access to the technology needed to support learners—particularly those preparing for Grade 12.
Our first 22 learners have joined the coding club, which uses Tangible Africa’s interactive games to teach coding through play. But it doesn’t stop there, participants also develop communication, teamwork, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. One of the featured games, Ranger, challenges learners to use code to save rhinos from poachers before it’s too late. Along the way, the game presents real-world information about poaching and other environmental issues, helping learners understand conservation and inspiring them to be the change they want to see in the world (Gandhi).
Lifelong Learning and Passion for IT
Local schools are dedicating more classroom time to sessions in the computer hubs. This has not only helped upskill learners from a young age but has also sparked a passion for IT in some students—many of whom now choose to spend extra time at the hubs during school holidays.
A New Pathway Through Umuzi
While upskilling learners is a critical first step, our CEO, Lindy Sutherland, asked the important question: “What’s next? Where do these young people go after matric?”
This prompted a new partnership with BBD and Umuzi—an organisation that offers remote learnerships, enabling students in the Eastern Cape to access high-quality digital skills training from home.
We’re proud to share the success story of two exceptional young people from our community: Lukhanyiso and Lisakhanya, who were selected for the prestigious Umuzi Learnership.
The Umuzi Learnership is a rigorous, work-based programme leading to nationally recognised qualifications in high-demand fields such as coding, data science, web development, and data engineering. With these skills, graduates can pursue global career opportunities—working remotely for international companies while remaining in and uplifting their own communities.
Steppingstones to Success
Out of 74 applicants, Lukhanyiso and Lisakhanya stood out during a rigorous selection process designed to identify candidates with dedication, intelligence, and the potential to thrive in a fast-evolving digital world.
“The computer hubs changed the community.” - Lukhanyiso Jibilise
Their journey began at our local computer hubs, where learners like Lukhanyiso and Lisakhanya first gained access to digital tools and training. These hubs, made possible by our partnership with BBD Software, have become stepping stones to opportunity—empowering community members with vital digital literacy and technical skills.
Thanks to BBD’s support, both learners received laptops and routers to complete their learnerships online. Umuzi has provided them with a platform to achieve qualifications that once seemed out of reach.
“I will be the first to have a higher education in my family.” - Lisakhanya
This is more than a personal achievement, it is a powerful symbol of transformation, for individuals, families, and the wider community. Thank you to Umuzi for changing lives in our communities.
Building a Legacy for Families and Communities
The computer hubs act as a bridge between high school members aspiring to study further or community seeking employment. Our facilitator is there to assist with exam preparation as well as internships, tertiary education applications, bursaries and job applications.
From Support to Impact
Together, we become stronger – thank you to BBD Software for setting the IT foundation in our communities, for supporting upskilling, and for providing a full-time facilitator. Your continued support is creating ripple effects that promote lasting, thriving communities.
