Winter might have you reaching for your warmest layers, but there’s something magical about this season on safari. At Kariega Game Reserve, the landscape transforms into a wild, golden wonder—crisp air, soft light, and incredible sightings at every turn. With five unique biomes to explore, the reserve is alive with rich flora and an abundance of wildlife, making every game drive feel like a new adventure.

Cool mornings and comfortably warm days create the perfect rhythm—for both wildlife and guests. With over 12,000 hectares of protected wilderness to roam, there’s nothing quite like watching antelope graze across the open plains while you breathe in the fresh, stillness of a winter morning. While spotting the Big 5 on safari at Kariega is always a must, there’s so much more we encourage our guests to see! The reserve is also home to more than 300 species of birds, from soaring fish eagles to tiny, darting kingfishers. Quirky warthogs, the elusive caracal, and even the nocturnal honey badger all add their own magic to the safari experience.

Watch the bush stir to life beneath a golden sunrise spilling across the rugged Eastern Cape landscape — or end your day as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of reds and yellows. Return from your drive to cosy, fire-warmed lodges, offering comfort and charm that allow you to enjoy the beauty of the bush without compromising your comfort.

As night falls, clear, star-strewn skies set the stage for magical evenings. Experience the wonder of the wild after dark with thrilling night drives, where you might catch a glimpse of some of our most secretive nocturnal creatures. It’s a whole new world in winter, and something that everyone should experience at least once.

Phenomenal Wildlife Encounters

The Eastern Cape enjoys pleasant weather year-round. Summer brings long, sunny days with game viewing at its optimal during the early morning and late afternoon game safari drives. During the hottest parts of the summer days, animals often seek shade, and guests retreat to cool, luxury lodges and swimming pools! Winter at Kariega, on the other hand, offers cooler temperatures that encourage wildlife to remain more active throughout the day. This creates ideal conditions for longer game drives and incredible wildlife encounters.

The cooler weather also makes our guided bush walks an unmissable part of the experience, inviting you to slow down and discover the smaller wonders of the Kariega wilderness. With clear visibility and continued animal activity during the midday lull, it’s the perfect time to encounter wildlife up close and on foot.

Golden Morning and Evening Game Drives

Wake up at a leisurely pace and embrace the fresh, morning sunrises at around 6:30 am. Early mornings can be quite chilly, so make sure you wrap yourself in cosy layers before heading out on your morning safari drive. Experience cool, misty mornings as they settle over the landscape, slowly giving way to warm, golden sunshine that breathes life into the bush. Wrap yourself in a blanket as you sip on fresh coffee or tea as you watch the bush slowly come to life around you. Listen to the symphony of birds, predators moving in the early light and other wildlife emerging to greet the day.

Evening game drives offer a completely different experience of the African bush and its animals, with dramatic skies painted with beautiful colours. Animals also tend to become active earlier in the afternoon during winter, often remaining visible into the evening, making the golden hours even more rewarding for wildlife sightings.

Cosy, Warm Lodges

After a day exploring the African bush, there’s nothing better than coming back to crackling fires, smiling staff and welcoming interiors. Spend your evenings enjoying hearty meals beside the fireplace while sharing stories of the day’s sightings.

Boma dinners under the stars are often a highlight for our guests, as they cosy up beside the fire, listening to the whispers, calls, and songs of the bush — all while enjoying good company and unmatched comfort.

Our safari lodges provide the perfect balance of luxury and cosiness, making every moment spent indoors just as memorable.

Stargazing and Perfect Winter Weather

We also encourage our guests to look up, as there’s nothing more spectacular than winter skies at Kariega. Clear and uninterrupted skies provide the perfect conditions for stargazing, with famous constellations such as the Southern Cross and the Milky Way on full display.
With winter temperatures averaging between 15 and 23 degrees Celsius, the days are often just warm enough to tempt you into a refreshing dip in the pool. This is especially fantastic if you follow your daytime swim up with an exhilarating night game drive. These drives are particularly exciting in winter, with better chances of spotting nocturnal creatures like lions on the move, elusive caracals, porcupines, aardvarks, and even chameleons.
