Kariega Game Reserve South Africa was recently very proud to become a member of Pack for a Purpose – a great initiative that enables guests to make a real difference in the areas they travel to.

Encouraging guests to spare a few kilograms in their luggage to aid local projects and the livelihood of local communities, Pack for a Purpose has created an extensive supply list from destinations all over the world including many game lodges in South Africa. The supply list for each destination is provided by the community-based projects in that area, ensuring that guests who wish to make meaningful contributions can choose which items they would like to bring, and can rest-assured that those items are exactly what is needed.

Pack for a Purpose has identified two projects at Kariega Game Reserve South Africa that guests can contribute to through wise use of luggage space. The first is an outreach programme at Farmerfield School, an underprivileged primary school located a short distance from Kariega Game Reserve. The outreach is orchestrated by the Kariega Conservation Volunteer Programme, and consists of the volunteers making weekly visits to the school, helping out with teaching and coaching, as well as helping as much as possible with maintenance and improvements. While the volunteers have been involved in various projects with Farmerfield with the help of the Kariega Foundation, sadly the school is without many basic supplies and is in need of everything from stationary and books to clothes and first aid kits.

Save the Rhino is the second identified project at Kariega Game Reserve South Africa and is an anti-poaching initiative geared to improving security and safety of rhinos on the Reserve. Like many game parks in South Africa, Kariega Game Reserve has not been immune to the scourge of rhino poaching that has recently erupted all over southern Africa. To improve security at the Kariega Game Reserve, Pack for a Purpose has identified items such as batteries, torches and binoculars for guests to include in their luggage.

Both projects identified by Pack for a Purpose are facilitated through the Kariega Foundation, a non-profit organisation geared toward social upliftment and sustainable wildlife management and conservation in the area.
