We have uplifting news! Endurance athlete Jamie Marais completed a super-human challenge at Kariega Game Reserve on 29 & 30 August 2020 as a heroic gesture to raise funds to protect our rhino and feed our neighbours in need.

The Kariega Foundation invites you to join Jamie and make a difference to the lives of South African people and wildlife who are facing huge challenges. In Jamie’s words: “No giant is too big to face.”

The Man on the Bike: Jamie Marais

In August 2016, Jamie Marais made history by becoming the first and only known person to speed-summit Cape Town’s iconic Table Mountain 22 times in 28 hours over two days. Ascending more than 16,000 vertical meters his purpose was to raise funds for the Sabrina Love Foundation. This was the first in an ongoing series of solo ultra-endurance challenges, each of which took place in a dangerous setting with intensely challenging physical objectives, and natural threats.

As a teenager, Jamie overcame his own giant of substance abuse and believes that sport and hard training changed his life and gave him a reason for living, as told in his autobiography “Determination”.

Jamie believes that "exercise can literally save your life and the body follows where the mind leads." Jamie inspires people to believe in themselves and face the giants in their lives through motivational talks about the life-changing power of sport and the secrets of accessing superhuman strength. A Message from the Kariega Family

Our sustainable ecotourism enterprise is a delicate balance between commercial stability, community collaboration, wildlife management and conservation. Along with our Kariega Foundation, we have created support for our people, animals and environment for over 30 years.

Covid-19 has decimated tourism in South Africa. With a zero revenue and no financial aid from government many privately owned game reserves, like Kariega, are needing support to stay strong and survive. If we don’t survive what will become of the animals we protect and the people we serve?

The Kariega family remain unwavering in our resolve to keep the animals protected, particularly rhino, and ensure that our staff and rural neighbours are supported through this Covid-19 crisis and beyond.

In March 2012, when three rhino at Kariega were simultaneously poached for their horns, we learnt in a very humbling and tangible way that conservation is a team sport. After the poaching we sent out a call for help to save a rhino called Thandi who was fighting for her life. The world responded, and thanks to the support that flowed from all corners of the earth, we succeeded! Thandi recovered and became the first rhino to survive a poaching attack. Thandi continues to amaze us and has gone on to gift us three calves, Thembi, Colin and Mthetho. Our collaborative efforts were worth it.

Now, feeling battered and bruised, we draw inspiration from Thandi’s story. With creativity, positivity, collaboration and your help we will survive… and succeed to keep our animals and endangered species protected, and the people we care for supported. The alternative is not an option.
