This fascinating bird is said to have received its name Secretary Bird from the crest of long feathers at the back of its head. The story goes that these look like the long quill pens that the olden day secretaries had tucked behind their ears or in their hair.

There are three species of zebra - the Burchell’s or plains zebra, the Grevy’s zebra and the mountain zebra. During your safari at Kariega Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape you will see herds of Burchell's zebra.

Having a drink of water tends to be somewhat challenging when you are over 4m tall! In order to get to the water giraffe have to spread their front legs at awkward angles, leaving them in a rather vulnerable position to predators such as lion.
How Often do Giraffes Drink?
This week ranger Jone found a zebra carcass. She investigated the cause of death and from her findings surmised that the animal had died from injuries sustained in a fight with another zebra. She found numerous hoof and bite marks on the carcass.
